You're described as a 'genre-blending duo', why do you think that is?
We come from such different worlds and are inspired by such different sounds that naturally when we come together, we blend a lot of our passions together. It would be impossible to stick to one genre. that would stunt our creative process too. The music we make is really the blend of our two weird and very different musical brains.
How does it feel being nominated for a Grammy for your debut album ‘Treehouse’?
It feels great! It is an honour and it was cool to get to go and to have an excuse to celebrate with our families and friends. We don't make music for accolades or other people's approval, so when that does happen, it really is special and unexpected.
From your single 'Best Friend' which launched the iPhone X, how has your music developed?
We are constantly evolving. We started playing bigger and bigger shows so one of the things we were inspired by is the crowds. We wanted to create music that would fill up more space and feel more dramatic in bigger crowds. We've also gone through a lot of different life experiences since Best Friend so some of the songs are more emotional and some of the songs are really carefree and about the parties we throw, called Animal Talk parties. That's where the inspiration for Purple Hat and Dancing on the People came from. People were literally dancing on top of people, it was so nuts.
You both said, "Our goal is to kill shame, set our spirits free, and be together!" How is this demonstrated in your music?
We make music that makes us feel alive and connected and honest, and we hope that is translated to people listening to it too!
How did you both come up with the concept of your new EP ‘DANCING ON THE PEOPLE’?
It's a lyric from our song Purple Hat, which was inspired by our Animal Talk parties. After the first Animal Talk party we threw, we were blown away by the energy created at the club. It was wild, sweaty, sold out, people dancing literally on top of people, everyone without inhibitions. We want all the music on the EP to bring about that feeling of freedom and to make people dance that crazily.
Any intentional messages radiating off the EP which we should look out for?
There are a lot of little intentional message moments. In Ringless Soph sings "I'm more than the worst thing I've ever done, I'm less than the best thing I've ever won" which to us just means we can't be defined by our worst or our best moments. We are not our accolades or our failures. We are constantly evolving. In ‘Like This’, we talk about all the ways we can be held back: "Shame, you kill my spirit and you're useless. Sugar, you're addictive and so ruthless. Speaking in absolutes may be destructive may be stupid. But I have a voice. And I'm gonna use it." We really want the music to set people free as much as it sets us free and makes us happy in the process of making it!
What kind of responses have you received from your 1 million streamed track 'Swing'?
We love that song so much and we are so happy it's resonating with people. It's one of our favourites to perform live. It has this epic feel to it, like a beautiful thunderstorm.
What's should the UK be expecting from your upcoming RIP SHAME Europe tour?
Loose af dance parties. We've had some crazy shows so far and we're so excited to keep it going. Stretch. Hydrate.
Why is it so important for you both to embrace themes of inclusivity and self-empowerment in your music?
It's important to be inclusive and empowering in our lives -- and the music we make is an extension of us. If we are going to say something and give out an energy into the world, we want it to be one that we feel makes the world a better place. Also, we just have so much fun. We want everyone to experience it with us!!
